The Houston Fire Ant Seasonal Guide: When to Treat and Why

February 3, 2026 5 min read

Fire ants don't respect calendars — but they do respect a proper mound-and-broadcast treatment on the right schedule.

Fire ants are one of the most persistent pest problems on Gulf Coast properties. The good news: they're highly treatable with the right approach on the right schedule.

Why one-off treatments fail

Treating just a visible mound may kill that colony's workers, but if the queen isn't reached and neighboring colonies aren't disrupted, you'll see mounds again in weeks. That's why we always combine direct mound treatment with a full-yard broadcast.

Best treatment windows

Spring (March–April) and fall (September–October) are the highest-value windows because mound activity is at its peak and the ants are actively foraging — which means bait-based treatments work best. Summer treatments are still valuable but often need reinforcement.

What about kids and pets?

All broadcast products we use are labeled family-safe once dry. We'll advise on any specific wait times per product used on your property.
